About The Artist
Originally from Temagami First Nation, Benjamin Chee Chee‘s first exhibition was held in 1973 Soon after he gained fame as he developed his unique style of clear graceful lines with minimal colour of birds and animals giving sense to emotion and movement.
He lived a rich and full, but tragically short, life. During his four years as a full time professional visual artist in Montreal and Ottawa his work was prolific and disparate, ranging from his iconic ‘Friends’ and ‘Benji birds’ to his less generally familiar abstracts.
About the Temiskaming Art Gallery
Since 1980, the Temiskaming Art Gallery (TAG) has been pivotal in promoting and showcasing visual art in northeastern Ontario. TAG has exhibited the talent of local artists alongside national and international exhibitions. Our permanent collection is an ever-growing valuable treasure; a beautiful part of Canada’s collective cultural heritage. The gallery’s education and outreach programmes continue to enrich the community through the joy of experiencing and understanding visual art.
The Permanent Collection
Over one hundred and eighty-five works of art are preserved in the Temiskaming Art Gallery’s permanent collection. And it is continually growing. The acquisition and care of this material has been a work of love and dedication. Almost every item came because of someone’s donation. Often it was the artist’s – and anyone who knows the labour and emotion that goes into any piece of art, will know what a valuable gift each was. Other acquisitions have come from generous owners or left as bequests. The result is an unparalleled collection of northeastern Ontario art as well as some excellent examples from artists across Canada and abroad.
